Tying knots is a skill that every fishing enthusiast should possess, although, contrary to appearances, this process is not at all easy. How can you effectively tie a fish hook? Here’s a quick guide!

Fishing knots – without them you can’t move

Do tying knots and fishing really have so much in common? By all means! Until now, no one has been able to invent an ingenious glue or tape with which we could permanently connect hooks to line or two lines to each other. Fishing enthusiasts are therefore reliant on fishing knots – the best and most effective of the currently known ways to tie a hook. Despite the fact that this is a seemingly very simple skill, even the most experienced fishermen can have trouble mastering it.

Fishing knots – types

To begin with, it is worth familiarizing yourself with the types of fishing knots, of which there are really quite a few. Knots differ from each other because of their use – completely different is the equipment designed to fix a hook, swivel, artificial lures or one used to reconnect a broken line. Each of them has its own characteristics and properties. Among the most popular knots used by anglers can be mentioned:

Simple Blood – used to connect two sections of fishing line

  • Trilene – widely regarded as the strongest of the knots for connecting swivels and snaps. It is a variation of the so-called End Knot designed for very small hooks,
  • Snelling – a recommended knot, great for connecting hook and line,
  • Palomar – used in “fly” fishing.

Not all types of knots will work equally well. Suffice it to cite the Overhand knot, usually avoided by anglers, characterized by very low strength. Therefore, before going fishing, it is worth paying attention to the equipment that will accompany us in practicing our hobby.

Fishing knots – how to tie a hook?

Specialized equipment plays a significant role, but in fishing our manual skills will always prove crucial. An improperly made knot can make even the best-looking fishing trip miserable – a broken line and a protruding hook or a fish swallowing the bait are just some ways of a wide range of examples. In each of the aforementioned situations, the angler loses not only money, but most importantly pride and the chance to catch his dream specimen. In view of this, regular work on improving one’s competence in knot tying will certainly pay off – as the popular adage goes, training makes perfect!

When tying fishing knots, it is worth remembering a few basic points. Before tightening the knot, the line should be moistened, and the line should be slightly taut. Do not make sudden movements – knots should be tightened calmly, with slow movements. Also remember that the more knots on the line, the less durable it will be. The most important thing in learning to tie knots is regularity – only in this way can you master to perfection this not easy skill!
