How to choose the right shoes for running? This question is asked not only by amateurs and people who are just beginning their adventure with this sport, but even experienced runners. We are here to help. Here’s our guide to buying your first pair of running shoes
Running is a great sport, especially for beginners, because it requires virtually no equipment. You don’t need a ball, goals, skis, rollerblades or pads to run. You can run practically anytime and in almost any outfit. It is only important to do it with head and not to endanger your health. Therefore, the only necessary expense is to buy good shoes. You should not save on this. Years later, your knees and joints will thank you for it
But what does “good shoes” mean? Good shoes are those in which you are comfortable, which do not chafe, do not press and are not too big. The foot, especially during long distances, swells a little, so when choosing shoes for running, you can look for shoes that are half or even a full size larger than those worn every day. However, you should not overdo it, because too loose running shoes are a big risk. The foot that moves in the shoe puts additional strain on the heels and midfoot. This can cause a lot of pain, which can even make it difficult to move. There is probably no need to mention shoes that are too small. It’s a shame about toes and heels that are torn to the bone
In order to take care of them, it’s worth paying attention to the proper heel counter, that is the place where the shoe ends at the back. It should fit, not move with every step (its hardness is an individual issue). This will provide adequate cushioning. So will the sole and foam, which is the layer that separates the sole from the insole. If you are just getting started with running, look for a fairly thick foam. Remember that your legs and feet are just learning. For now, they are not used to this type of effort. The more you weigh and the longer you’ve been away from regular sports, the more cushioning you’ll need.
This is especially important for urban runners. If you don’t have the opportunity to run regularly on unpaved terrain, then take care of your joints and knees by choosing thick foam. If you run mostly on sidewalk and cobblestones, you can instead choose shoes with a lighter, flatter tread. On the other hand, people running mainly in the woods or mountains can afford a thinner foam layer, but a better shaped sole. The so called aggressive tread is the best ally in the fight against puddles, stones, roots and all the obstacles that may cause a slip or a fall

Advanced runners operate with terms like supination (placing the feet more outward when running – a rarer affliction) and pronation (twisting the ankles toward the middle – much more common), but beginners can give up on such a scientific approach
The point is simply to feel good in the shoes. It’s best to try them on in a store, walk or jog for a few minutes, and then go to a treadmill or some other surface and check how your new purchase works in practice. If during this first test, it turns out that they are not comfortable, but they will not break, then in most good stores there will be no problem to return them
You can buy shoes from the running collection in the market for 100 zł, and you can also go to a specialized store and add another zero to the price. There is no golden advice on this. Of course, manufacturers will persuade us to buy the most expensive models, with ultracharging, mega-amortization and gel insoles. However, we recommend common sense. 100 zlotys more does not mean a hundred percent better performance and a hundred times more fun
Once you find the right pair, which you will love with reciprocity, you can run in them even for a decade. That’s why it’s better to pay attention, first of all, to the solidity of the workmanship. Sometimes the less “trinkets”, the more comfortable you will be running and the longer the shoes will serve you. So that you approach the purchase of the next pair already as an experienced, seasoned runner.
