A racket is the most important piece of equipment for every tennis player. Adequately fitted, it will guarantee proper comfort during a match. What parameters should be taken into account when choosing a racket?

Weight

When it comes to the weight of a tennis racket, products of this type available on the market are divided into:

  • Models weighing less than 270 g – they are characterized by the fact that during a match, you need to put a little more energy into hitting the ball. At the same time, the lightness of the racket allows for an accurate feel and a smooth swing.

  • Models weighing between 270 and 300 g – these rackets require less power to hit the ball. They are stable and do not strain the wrist.

  • Models weighing more than 300 g – such rackets allow for confident and strong hits. In addition, the wrist is relieved.

Balance

This parameter is responsible for where the center of gravity of the racket is located. There are the following options to choose from:

  • Over the handle – racquets of this type are heavy and guarantee a weak but precise hit.

  • Headed – these racquets are lightweight and provide a powerful but less precise strike.

  • Neutral – this is a compromise between the 2 solutions above.

Length

When it comes to this parameter, we have a choice of rackets:

  • Standard – their length is between 69 and 71 centimeters. They contribute to the dynamics of the game.

  • Long – they are longer than 71 centimeters. They guarantee a strong and precise hit.

Head

In tennis rackets, we can deal with the following types of heads:

  • Small – their size is less than 630 square centimeters. They guarantee a slightly lower impact force, while having great control over the ball. This is a good option for advanced players.

  • Medium – their size ranges from 630 to 660 square centimeters. They provide a balance between ball control and hitting power. They are best suited for beginner players.

  • Large – they range in size from 660 to 720 square centimeters. They feature a comfortable bounce surface and slightly higher impact force. They are most often chosen by older people.

Frame

There are 3 thicknesses of tennis racquet frames to choose from:

  • Under 23 millimeters (thin) – these are designed for professionals who boast perfect bounce technique.

  • Between 23 and 25 millimetres (thin) – best suited for beginners and those who play tennis only recreationally.

  • Above 25 millimeters (thick) – they are intended for older people.

Handle size

The handle size of a tennis racket should be matched to the size of your hand. This is because it guarantees a firm grip and effectively reduces the risk of straining the wrist. How do I adjust the handle size? Measure the distance between the center of your palm and the tip of your ring finger.

Tension

The lighter the string is, the harder the ball can be bounced. A stronger one, on the other hand, provides better control over the ball. The string can be:

  • Natural – sheep or cow intestine is used for its production. This type of string is characterized by high strength and elasticity. Its disadvantages include low resistance to the negative influence of weather conditions.

  • Synthetic – this type of string is usually produced from nylon. This material is durable and characterized by good dynamic properties. We can also deal with polyester string, which is extremely thin and durable. Unfortunately, after some time it may lose its flexibility. On the market, we can also meet with multifilament tension. Its main advantage is high efficiency. Another proposal is a hybrid string, which allows you to adjust the horizontal and vertical strings to individual needs. The last available solution is a mixed structure string that provides good grip and ball rotation.
